Program Description

The Scholars Program is a longitudinal experience of guided study for exploration of medical practice, education or research. It consists of a series of research activities throughout the four years of medical school. Elective tracks within the Scholars Program provide medical students with an opportunity to develop evidence-based expertise in a selected area during their four years of medical education. Fostering creativity and innovation, the project(s) chosen for study within the Scholars Program is based on a student's existing interests or on new ideas.

Each student in the Scholars Program works with faculty from Drexel or external institutions in one of five separate tracks. Interested students apply to a track of their choosing in the Fall/Winter of their first year after identifying a mentor and a potential project. Once accepted, students begin their research project during the summer between the first and second years. Students who choose to complete their Scholar’s track post year 1 summer research with Drexel or Drexel-affiliated faculty can apply to the DUCOM Medical Student Summer Research (MSSRF) program. https://drexel.edu/medicine/academics/md-program/medical-student-research/medical-student-research-fellowship/

To progress in the program, students are required to meet and document goals each year (see program requirements).

The Scholars Program offers tracks in biomedical research, public health, global health, medical education, business, and medical informatics. Students completing the Scholars Program graduate with a Scholars designation on their final transcripts.

The Scholars Program is available to first year medical students at Drexel University College of Medicine. Students apply in the Fall/Winter of their first year.
