Professional Formation Newsletter


The Professional Formation newsletters provides information for a global community of practice that advances conversations and perspectives on the practice, education, and research of clinical professionalism as it evolves.


The Association of Professionalism in Health Care (APHC) is affiliated with Professional Formation. APHC promotes multidisciplinary collaborative dialogue and research about professionalism and its link with humanism and medical ethics. Another major focus of the APHC is to develop educational materials that promote professionalism. 

Initially established by a group of APHC members, Professional Formation newsletter is an online resource for teaching, assessment, remediation, and research in professionalism. Developed with funding from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, APHC members Janet de Groot edits this valuable on-line educational resource.


The purpose of the APHC-PFO newsletteris to build community in the area of professionalism among all health professions. This fosters continuing dialogue, development of innovations and educational materials and support communities of practice in relation to professionalism in addition to the annual APHC meetings that allows face-to-face conversations. 

Aspects of professionalism that we include: 

  • Professional identity development 
  • Humanities 
  • Case studies with commentary by faculty members
  • Educational tips on professionalism: remediation, faculty development, etc.
  • News e.g. professionalism conference or workshop summaries
  • Podcasts 
  • Topics, such as how humanism and professionalism or ethics and professionalism intersect or differ
  • Book reviews 
  • Topical areas of interest related to professionalism
