HISTORY OF THE
WHITE COAT CEREMONY

The White Coat Ceremony was established by the
Arnold P. Gold Foundation in 1993 at the College
of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. It
has been designed to produce a new generation of physicians
with a renewed focus on compassion.

Wearing their "cloaks of compassion," new medical students
recite an oath, which they will repeat again
when they complete their medical school education. This
meaningful ritual, held in the presence of family, friends,
faculty, board members, administrators and alumni helps
the students become aware of their responsibilities from
the first day of their medical studies.

The White Coat Ceremony is designed to clarify that a physician's
responsibility is not only to take care of patients, but
also to care for patients.

Archived video from the White Coat Ceremony will become available to view online several weeks after the event.
