How does Professional Formation improve competency in professionalism?

The Pilot Program

From 2017 to 2020, 13 institutions piloted Professional Formation modules under the aegis of a Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation grant. Learners completed over 2,100 pre and post module tests that tracked their attitudes and perceived efficacy changes. Results indicated the learners’ scores increased on average over 30 percent for certain modules reflecting a positive change in perceptions. The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), comprised of six national associations of health professions schools, released the competencies to guide curriculum development. Professional Formation’s modules’ learning goals map to the four major IPEC competencies and their 39 sub-competencies, covering 82 percent.
